The Most Wanted and Underrated Skills in Leaders

In 2003, after reaching my dream job, I felt I was going to have a heart attack at 34 years old. I was overworked, stressed, exhausted, and unhappy.  I had migraines that would not go away, and not until I found mindfulness did my life begin to change.

Could mindfulness be the medicine people need to become greater people?

More companies are making wellbeing practices available to their employees.  Although I didn’t find mindfulness through my employers, I was able to use it on myself and my staff.

Meditation has been a game-changer for me and numerous other leaders. I understand your initial thoughts-‘Meditation? Just sitting around doing nothing?’ Let me assure you, it’s far more than that. It’s a potent tool that can revolutionize our leadership mindset and actions.

First things first, let’s get real about leadership. It’s not just about making decisions and giving orders. True leadership comes from within. It’s about having that inner fire, that calling to make a difference in the lives of others. Great leaders aren’t in it for themselves; they’re driven by a deep-seated desire to uplift and empower those around them. And that’s where meditation comes in.

Meditation isn’t just some new-age fad. It’s a practice backed by solid science. Let me break it down for you with a couple of eye-opening research findings:

1. Improved Decision-Making: A study published in the journal “Psychological Science” found that just 15 minutes of mindfulness meditation can help people make smarter choices. The researchers discovered that meditation helps us recognize and let go of past experiences that might cloud our judgment. As leaders, we’re faced with tough decisions daily. Imagine having a tool that helps you approach each choice with a clear, unbiased mind. That’s the power of meditation.  For people having decision fatigue, meditation is a medication.

2. Enhanced Emotional Intelligence: Another study, this one from the University of California, Santa Barbara, showed that mindfulness training can significantly improve our ability to control our emotions and understand the emotions of others. For us leaders, this is huge. Being able to stay cool under pressure and truly connect with our team members? The number one skill found in top leaders is Emotional Intelligence.

But here’s the thing—meditation doesn’t just change what we do; it changes who we are at our core. We begin to unbecoming the stress, pressure, demands, responsibilities, systems, and expected results. It helps us tap into that inner calling that all great leaders have—the desire to serve and uplift others. When we meditate, we create space in our minds. We step back from the chaos of day-to-day operations and connect with our deeper purpose.

Through regular practice, we become more self-aware. We start to recognize our own biases, fears, and limiting beliefs. And once we see them, we can work on them. This self-awareness is crucial because, let’s face it, we can’t lead others effectively if we can’t lead ourselves.

Meditation also cultivates compassion and empathy. As we learn to be kind and patient with ourselves during meditation, it naturally extends to how we treat others. We become better listeners, more understanding managers, and more inspiring leaders.

But don’t just take my word for it. Many of the world’s top leaders swear by meditation. From CEOs of Fortune 500 companies to world-renowned entrepreneurs, they’ve discovered the secret weapon that is mindfulness. They’ve found that taking time to quiet the mind speeds up success.

Now, I get it. As leaders, we’re busy. The idea of sitting still for even five minutes can seem impossible. But that’s exactly why we need it. In a world that’s constantly demanding our attention, taking time to turn inward isn’t just helpful – it’s essential.

Starting a meditation practice doesn’t have to be complicated. You can start with just five minutes a day, but 8 minutes is recommended. Find a quiet spot, sit comfortably, and focus on your breath. When your mind wanders (and it will), gently bring it back to your breath. That’s it. Simple but powerful. As you develop your practice, you’ll start to notice changes. You will find yourself responding rather than reacting. You will discover new solutions to old problems. You will feel more connected to your team and your mission.

Remember, leadership isn’t just about what we achieve; it’s about who we become in the process. Meditation is a tool that helps us become the kind of leaders we aspire to be – clear-minded, emotionally intelligent, and deeply committed to serving others.

Carve out a few minutes each day for meditation. Stick with it, even when it feels difficult. Because when we change our minds, we change our leadership. And when we change our leadership, we change the world.
